60’s Remembrances

Rose & I went to a Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) concert last night and it brought back  lots of memories of the 60’s when I was in High School and College.   Here are some stories/remembrances worth describing:

  • Marge and going shopping by bicycle. – see below
  • Atlantic City Steel Pier – and lots of live shows – see below
  • NYC Plays – see below
  • Summer trips to the Jersey Shore
  • Saturday evenings in the Tony Ragucci basement…
  • what  else?

Marge and going shopping by bicycle.

Whenever Marge wanted something she would ask me (Joe) if I would ride my bike and get it for her.  Typically my Dad was working.  Her “nice’ side came out during these times and I  would say ok.  I got on my bike and went to one of the places in Carteret.  Typically it was to the bakery on Washington Ave in Carteret, a little over a mile from home.  She wanted cakes and sometimes bread dough to make things. Sometimes it was to the food store a few blocks from home or the local mom and pop store. It was typically not a bother since I enjoyed riding my bike around town.

Atlantic City Steel Pier – and lots of live shows

When we were dating Rose and I frequently went during the summer on Saturday’s to Atlantic City for the day.  The Steel Pier was our favorite because it was quite inexpensive to spend the day seeing movies and shows (I was poor during my college years).  During the late 60’s many of the popular rock and roll groups would be there performing and it was cheap.  We would get a list of who was there when and make plans to go.  I can’t remember all the groups but I remember Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and the Beach Boys to name a few.

NYC Plays

When Rose and I were dating and early marriage years we were able to go see several NY City Plays.  The cost was very reasonable (unlike now!).  Here are some that I remember:

  • Jesus Christ Superstar – the original broadway play was amazing.  Many years later we went to the revival which tried to make it modern.  We didn’t like it.
  • Hair – this was a very unusual play and very much a product of the 60’s “hippy” generation (thus the name “Hair”).  The music and dancing was great.
  • 1776 – we took Mike and Ricky with us to this “historical” play about the beginnings of our country.  It was quite good.
  • Others ???

Later there were many other plays we attended like

  • Les Miserables,  Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Cats, Chicago, Evita, and others
  • Summer trips to the Jersey Shore
  • Saturday evenings in the Tony Ragucci basement…
  • what  else?
